Peach air review

[Peach Air Review]

This is just a review of my experience with Peach Air. Overall I'd say you get what you pay for, and I don't think I'll fly peach air again.

Peach air is a new Japanese budget airline that was established just 3 years ago in 2011. They have flights between Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and Hong Kong.

Price: $4,000 HKD round trip from Hong Kong – Kansai International.
They have only 2 flights per day on this route.

Part 1 – In flight experience
  1. Staff: the staff was really nice and polite, but their English was pretty poor. If you don’t speak Japanese there would be a problem communicating complex questions.
  2. Seats: I chose window seats so they were nice and spacious. However, you cannot put the seats back at all!
  3. Food: there isn’t a meal that comes with a flight. You can order from their menu which consist of Japanese food and drinks, payment can be made in Japanese Yen cash, flight origin currency (change will be in yen), or credit card (with orders more than ¥1,000). But all the hot food runs out after the first 3 row of passengers order. Every else left was bread, salad, or other cold food, which is really not ideal if you didn’t eat prior to the flight.
Part 2 – Ground Experience
  1. Terminal at KIX – Peach air uses the new Terminal 2 at Kansai International airport. It looks like a temporary building made out of metal scraps. Wi-fi is so weak it’s basically not functional. A shuttle is required between Main Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. After late night (around 11pm) the shuttle only runs once per hour.
  2. Check in counter – Again, staff doesn’t really speak English, which is a major problem when you have complicated questions about your flight. The check-in counter is closed by 9pm, and there is no one to answer your questions after that, when other major airlines in Terminal 1 still have counters opened. They are also super anal about carry on items, you can only have 1 small carry on and 1 personal bag, i.e. if you have another shopping bag, even if it’s small, they will force you to check in your small carry on luggage.
  3. Customer service - Our return flight was scheduled for 9pm on the 18th (Friday). Due to a typhoon passing by Hong Kong, our plane was stuck in Hong Kong, so the flight was delayed until 5am on the 19th. When you went up to the counter, they gave us 3 options:
    • Wait until 5am, but the flight isn’t guaranteed to come back (they couldn’t tell us if we were guaranteed a seat or not. If the flight doesn’t come back at 5am, it would push back the next flight at 9am, which means there will be 2 crowds of passengers waiting to board, which means our seats aren’t guaranteed even if we bought tickets)
    • Book the next available peach flight, which is not until 3 days later on the Monday, which is ridiculous. The reason is that a lot of other people switched their flights already.
    • Refund your tickets, and catch another flight with another airline. When asked what other airlines fly to Hong Kong the next day, all they said was “we don’t know, please ask the information desk”. Are you serious? Even if you can’t book it for us because Peach isn’t part of any airline alliance (which sucks already), couldn’t you check with your computer at least? Surely you have internet.

Because there was a lot of risk involved if we wait till 5am for the flight, we decided to not refund anything, go to terminal 1 first to ensure we have a return flight with another airline, and then come back to Peach to refund our flight. When we finished all of that at 9pm and went back to Terminal 2, the Peach counter was closed, even though there were still flights arriving from the domestic line.

And at the end, it turned out that the flight that was supposed to return from HK to Kansai International at 5am didn't even return until 2pm in the afternoon. But all the other flights flying from Kansai International and HK in the morning were not delayed and left on time. I really don't know what the issue with Peach Air is.

Blog 41 (Vlog) | Kansai Trip (Nara/Osaka), Day 6 - 8

[ July 17 (Thur) ]
A day in Nara & Rinku Premium Outlets

Link to the YouTube Vlog is at the end of this blog posting

Originally we were going to go to Universal Studios since Harry Potter land just opened! But it is really crowded, I’m feeling sick still, plus the entry tickets are expensive and not guaranteed, so we decided not to go. To go to Harry Potter land, you need to pay to enter Universal Studios first ¥6,400, and then go line up for Harry Potter land tickets after you get in. There are quotas for entry each day, so once quotas run out you’re out of luck.

From Osaka to Nara, the best way is to take the Kintetsu from Namba station to Kintatsu Nara station. If you take the JR to the JR Nara station, it’s around a 1km walk to the main attractions. Kintetsu express from Namba to Nara takes around 35 min with 11 stops, ¥540. There’s also a rapid express with 9 stops and Limited Express with 7 stops. From the Kintetsu Namba station, you’ll first run into the Nara Deer Park! There’s lots of deers roaming freely in park, chilling under the shade, or eating grass. They aren’t scared or hostile towards humans at all. You can buy deer cookies for ¥150 everywhere. The moment you unwrap the cookies, deers will crowd around you and try to grab them from you. They might be a bit excited, but they’re not violent at all. The most I got was a deer tugging on my dress lightly to get my attention from behind (it’s super cute!)

Say Cheese! (In Nara)

If you continue straight for another 500m or so, on the left hand side you will see Todaiji, which is a Buddhist temple. The entry fee is ¥500, but the temple is huge and definitely worth the visit. There is a gigantic Buddha statue that is 15m tall in the main temple, and other really cool looking guardian statues as well. Further from Todaiji (probably another 700m), there’s also Kasuga Taisha which is another famous Temple.

In this picture I'm praying to see if my grandfather is well. He passed away around 10 years ago. He was very involved in the Lion's club and frequently flew to Japan to visit his friends there. Every time I'm in Japan I think of him.

Large statue, apparently he's a god that has very good eyesight?

Lantern festival held on August 15th this year, you can get a lantern for 1,000 - 3,000 yen and can wish for various things, like home safety, health.. etc

This is an Ema wall especially for those who want to pray for passing exams

These different deer products are so cute!!

Afterwards, we went back to Osaka area, and took the airport express train from Namba to Rinku Park to go to the Premium Outlets. A lot of people go before they board their flights, but wheeling around luggage in this huge shopping area isn’t ideal.

When you first get out of Rinku Park station, you’ll walk through a mall with a Ferris Wheel. It’s full of local Japanese brands at affordable prices. There’s also a kid’s section with lots of baby clothing, good for families with young children. Pass the Ferris Wheel, you’ll get to Rinku Premium Outlets, which is the best outlet with most brands in the Kansai area. There’s Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Coach, Celine, Anna Sui, Burberry, Samantha Thavasa, and all the major sport brands. On the Seaside, there are more Japanese brands like Cecil McBee and Egoist. If you like shoes, definitely visit Nuovo. It’s a Japanese brand that sells a lot of really pretty shoes around the price range of ¥4,000.

I got these wedge sandals that are super comfy at Nuovo for 4,700 yen

[ July 18 (Fri) ]

On the last day, we spent most of the day shopping. But first, breakfast at St. Marc Cafe again!

There’s a Shibuya 109 at Tenoji Station! Although it’s only 1 floor, it’s still worth going if you don’t have the chance to go to the original one in Tokyo. Also, there is a massive OPA mall at Shinsaibashi Station with 8/F of inexpensive Japanese branded women’s clothing. I also went to EST and Hep5 again near Umeda station. I found a really nice red bag for only ¥3,500 in Hep5. Its style is similar to Samantha Thavasa (which is super pricey even at the outlet).

Got this handbag at Hep 5 for only ¥3,500!
The Coach card holder was around ¥4,000 from Mitsui Outlet

Inside Hep 5. The mall is massive!

If you’re not really into shopping for clothes, Yodobashi Umeda is a good place to go. It’s an electronics shop that’s 8/F tall. You can get anything from laptops, TVs, gaming consoles, cameras, phone accessories, home electronics… basically anything you can think of, all in one building. There’s also 5 aisles of iPhone5 cases!

Kansai Airport Bound Express train

Our flight was at 9pm, but we left Osaka nice and early around 5:30pm so we wouldn’t need to rush. But we found out that our flight was delayed until 5am the next day! That’s 8hrs! And the reason was that there is a typhoon near Hong Kong (actually nowhere near, when we actually checked). The plane we’re supposed to be on is stuck in Hong Kong, so there are no planes to fly us back. Throughout this whole process, Peach Air’s service was very poor. But I will discuss this in the Peach air review blog.

Instead of waiting and betting on a flight not guaranteed, we decided to just book a flight for the next day (Hong Kong Express at 3pm) and stayed at the Hotel right beside terminal 1. Thank god there was still rooms because we thought a lot of people would rush to the hotel. But since the hotel is a bit pricy, a lot of people choose to wait at terminal 2 for the 5am flight.

(Jul 19, Sat, 1 extra day)

We woke up at around 10am and went to Rinku Premium Outlet to shop again since it’s only 1 stop away from the airport. Then we returned to the Airport around lunch time to grab some food, then was finally on the way home. The flight was very bumpy, and the flight attendants weren’t very nice on Hong Kong Express… I guess it’s also a budget airline, and customer service standards in Hong Kong are very different from Japan. The way they talked was very rude and direct. At least we got back to Hong Kong safely.

Cecil McBee is a very common brand in Japanese magazines. Their clothes are so cute!! It can be worn to work or for casual days and is affordable!

Just at Nike, wearing my new sandals

Blog 40 (Vlog) | Kansai Trip (Kyoto), Day 5

[ July 16 (Wed) ]

Today is another day in Kyoto.

Link to the YouTube Vlog is at the end of this blog posting

I woke up with a really bad sore throat and fever in the morning though from being outside all day the previous day (we walked 20km outside in the 32C heat). Sorry if I didn't vlog enough or take enough photos.

We had St. Marc Cafe again for breakfast!

We took the normal express train from Umeda to Kyoto, which took around 40 minutes. It was express for the first 3 stops and turned into a local train later on. After we got to Kyoto, we took the JR to Saga-Arashiyama 嵯峨嵐山 station to see the famous Bamboo Forest near Arashi Mountain.

Some cute elementary school kids at Kyoto Station. Their uniform is adorable!

At Kyoto Station

The walk from the station to the actual Bamboo forest was around 15 minutes, but immediately after entering the forest, it felt like the temperature dropped 5 degrees and was really breezy. There are carriages pulled by people you can sit on instead of walking. The only down side is the mosquitoes in the shades are vicious! I came out with 3 huge bites. There’s also 1 shrine, Nonomiya Shrine 野宮神社,  and 1 temple inside the bamboo forest.

Nonomiya Shrine - on the right side it says that this place is good for those who want to pray for getting into good schools/getting good grades, or having better luck in relationships. But it also has a small section inside for those who want to pray for safe baby delivery. This is a common thing that Japanese pray for, both pregnant women and men that have a partner expecting a baby pray for this.

Inside Nonomiya Shrine there's a pretty little area that looks like a small Japanese garden

Next we went to Yasaka Shrine八坂神社, the main shrine in the Kyoto area. It’s near Gion 祇園, accessible with #100 bus from Kyoto station. I got a health Omamori お守り since I was feeling sick. But I did manage to draw a good O-mikuji おみくじ. This shrine is very famous for New Year rituals as well as the Gion Matsuri (Gion Festival). Gion Festival runs from July 17 – July 24, and is one of the top 3 most important festivals in Japan. Thousands of people rush on the main street in front of Yasaka Shrine dressed in Yukata (traditional summer Japanese clothing) to see the Yamaboko Floats. There are also a lot of snacks and vendors on the sides of the street.

The sponsors of Gion Festival

God of "tying relationships"

Ema 絵馬, wooden plates for you to write your wishes on and hang at the shrine. This is the first time I've seen Ema that is especially for love!

When you draw your luck (Omikuji おみくじ), and you get bad luck 凶, you need to tie your bad luck at the shrine in order to leave your bad luck there. If you bring the piece of paper home, you'll bring the bad luck home with you as well.

Since I was feeling pretty ill today, I got a health Omamori お守り, which are good luck charms that can be found in all temples. The most common ones are
  • Better luck in general 開運御守
  • Love luck/Relationship luck 恋愛/縁結び御守
  • Health Luck 健康御守
  • Longevity 長寿御守
  • Money luck 金運御守
  • Luck for school and exams 学業御守
  • Luck for safe travels 交通安全御守
  • Luck for safe baby delivery 安産御守.

This is a shrine within Yasaka Shrine, it's a shrine for beauty and is very popular among women

"Beauty Water"

A lot of other small shrines within Yasaka Shrine, each with a different god and purpose

A couple reading love Ema

We also wandered to Hanamikoji 花見小路, which is a traditional street where Geishas appear. We didn’t see any Geishas but I did manage to catch one riding a taxi. There are also many beautiful areas along the rivers, but you just need to walk around and explore to find them. On the way to the main river, there was a street performer playing guitar. He is one of the best guitar players I’ve seen before! I’ve included his performance in my vlog linked at the end. And we also ran into a Ninja Parade.

I really wished I was in better health so I could wear my Yukata. I also wore it to a Fireworks show 花火大会 when I went to Tokyo in 2009!

This guy is a really really good guitar player. One of the best I've seen in my life!

We went back to Osaka area just before sunset since I was still very ill, it’s a pity we couldn’t see Gion Matsuri at night. I really appreciate how pretty Kyoto is. It’s kept just traditional enough and is very very clean despite the amount of tourists visiting the town. And there are so many different shrines and scenic spots to see. Even though Gion Matsuri was very crowded, but everyone followed the police’s directions and everything was in order and controlled. Japan always impresses me in how peaceful and respectful it is.

Yamaboko Floats, there are around 20 of them all around the streets of Kyoto. I filmed some of them in my Vlog, which is linked below!
