I wanted to write this blog post to help people understand what is happening in HK now, especially those who can’t read the most updated news that are rolling out in Chinese. There are 2 main parts to this blog: the reason why Occupy Central happened, and a timeline of major things that happened throughout the past weekend. Links to additional articles will be included as well for more information.
All I’ve done is just gather information and translated them from various sites. If anything is inaccurate please let me know. Hope this will be helpful!
[The reason behind “Occupy Central”]
1. CY Leung was actually elected by an “Election Committee" consisting only of 1,200 people (who see themselves as Committee members) that elected the Chief Executive for a population of 7,000,000 in Hong Kong.
2. Where are these 1,200 representatives coming from? Basically they are elected by around 250,000 Hong Kong people of respective professions. That is, if you are a teacher, you can elect the representatives of the Education sector.
3. What has changed?
Before: 1200 people elect the Chief Executive.
Now: 1200 people elect the candidates of Chief Executive, and then the rest of Hong Kong people elect the Chief Executive from the candidates.
4. Occupy Central is then asking for the election of CE of Hong Kong in 2017 to be in compliance with international standards, which means citizens have equal votes with equal voting power, and any citizen can run the elections without unreasonable restrictions.
